philosophy

Lean Forward Design is entering its 15th year of drill design for high school and college marching bands, drum corps, indoor drumlines and winterguards.  In the past five years alone, Lean Forward has designed over eighty shows including drill design for Genesis Drum and Bugle Corps' "Hell Hath No Fury” in 2016. With clients in Texas, Illinois, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Michigan and West Virginia, Lean Forward has also designed drill for Appalachian State University, Eastern Michigan University, Georgia Southern University and Mars Hill University.

The strength of Lean Forward Design has always been the ability to deliver a performance that engages audiences on Fridays and Saturdays alike.  Whether they are students, parents, fans, or adjudicators, a Lean Forward show is consistently appealing, coordinated and effective.

What our clients at all levels will tell you is that Lean Forward will ALWAYS deliver musical drill that uplifts the performers and has them in the right place at the right time to achieve.  This success is no accident but is a result of our commitment to two core principles: the "Lean Forward Moment" and a "No Compromise" approach to show design.

LEAN FOWARD MOMENT

At the heart of every one of our designs is the "Lean Forward Moment." A Lean Forward Moment is a design aspect intended to draw the audience in (e.g., solos, section features, visual moment, special effects, etc). Our show design model includes these moments every 15–20 seconds in order to keep your audience fully engaged from the beginning of the show to the end. Designing and incorporating these "Lean Forward Moments" early in the design process and making them a core component of your show is one of the most important aspects of our work.

NO COMPROMISE

The best show designs are a collaborative process between designers and staff that puts ALL members of the ensemble in a position to be successful. All too often, directors are asked by their designers to choose between staging one section well at the expense of another. Our "No Compromise" approach to show design ensures that every section of the ensemble is staged properly without sacrificing effective show design. We guarantee that this continuity of design and coordination of effect that will take your band to a whole new level.

NO WORRY

It is no surprise that directors are finding this new era of marching band increasingly complex and difficult to teach and clean. Which is exactly why you need effective and musical drill design. As a director, you need every second to teach choreography, body movement, drill, and music! You don’t have time to waste on transitions that won’t work, or staging that doesn’t match the musical phrases. You need to have a product that is cleanable, effective and cohesive in design from day one. Instead of being worried about the first day of band camp, be ready.  No matter if you have thirty students or 300, Lean Forward is the answer you've been looking for.
